Footprint - Initial Reaction

After viewing the first 4 videos, what are your reactions? Was there anything that surprised you? Do you think after seeing these videos any of your habits will change?

  1. After watching the videos, it made me think allot. Americans take things for granted, we really don't understand how good we have things. Watching these videos makes me very grateful to be a part of this country. Before I watched these videos I never realized the reason our country was called the land of milk and honey. We literally have everything at our disposal, witch allows us as a whole to be very careless about things we use everyday.

    1. Tori, that is true, we do waste a log in this country, but hopefully, videos like this and classes like this one will inform people of this waste and we can start making better decisions.

i think what caught my attention more than anything else the amount of distance some goods can travel before reaching consumer. the idea of materials being shipped across the globe to a manufacturing center, shipping again to a final assembly plant, and again across the globe to reach consumer. this is shows both the drastic difference in the value of a product from one country to another, but how amazingly effective our species has become at transportation.

I agree watching this video made me want to start really paying close attention to how wasteful I have been and moving forward. It’s like we take thing for granted it’s the little things that matter, if we continue to be wasteful this generation coming up behind us will continue to be wasteful following in our footsteps. This video has made me look at things different when it comes to being mindful of the things that I am wasting.

  2. Well, the first thing that comes home to me very forcefully, is just how blessed, how prosperous, and yes, even how spoiled and pampered we are. Including me, we take so much for granted. If circumstances were to cause some of us to alter our lifestyle and go without the things we think we need on a daily basis, for sure some people would go insane. All because we have been so privileged and conditioned to have these supposedly comfort things of life.

I wonder also of all the waste of good food that went into making this video, the eggs, bananas, oranges, etc. While I do see the value of the video and the information it provides, be it graphically. Still, there was a lot of waste. And so many people literally starving.

And then all that water wasted daily when so many countries around the world are perishing for even a bucket of clean water. These videos have been very thought provoking for me. It is causing me to really take a second, third (and as many as needed) look at my life, see how I live and the things I value and those I take for granted.

    1. Rosalee, all of the food products used in this video did not go to waste. Those products that were not good for human consumption, we taken to rescue farms and fed to animals.

  3. Its good to know what thing are made out of, but its also bad to know how we waste alot of things. The baby diapers is what surprised me the most. After seeing this video's, I have to be careful in how me and my family waste a lot of things. We are going to stop drinking so many soda's. I think a lot of people needs to view these video's,so that they can be more educated about the waste in our country.

    1. Maria, yes, we do waste a lot. I hope too that videos such as these and this course will help us to take a look at all of the things that we use.

  4. These videos are helping me to see how much we waste on foolishness. Just to hear how much money we spend on hot dogs and sausages alone made my stomach cringe. When the lady also stated we ate 47 billion hamburgers in 2008 my heart almost fell out. I like the rubber duck example they used to show us how many showers we take in our life. I never would of imaged that we took 28,433 showers in a lifetime. That is a lot of cleaning. But in short the things we people do are extraordinary and amazing, yet greater is God. God is able to create a planet to sustain us even with our excessive use of resources.

    1. I too was shocked the first time I watched these videos and saw how much meat we do consume. It was crazy. I do not eat red meat or pork, so it kind of made me feel a little better, but there is still a lot of waste happening.

    2. Im shocked we have so plentiful of resources I'm surprised we have not ran out of any. Especially how much food we all eat in a lifespan.

  5. I have never been exposed to the numbers before. They are quite a bit shocking. I mean some of them I'm not even sure if I still believe. Its hard to beleive we have that kind of impact. But it still is things that we need in this world. This is shocking but I know none of those numbers are going to shrink because we have already been exposed to them and we already crave and need them so why would we change that? I do feel as if I do have a bigger impact on the world now then before.

    1. I agree its amazing once we see it for ourselves. I dont think that the numbers in some cases will shrink such as the sugar consumption i think it will get worse because there is a high percentage for obesity

After watching the videos, I was surprised at just how much each person consumes and uses in a lifetime. For instance, I like to drink Mountain Dew and I learned that over the Span of my life, I will have probably consumed close to 43,371 cans of it. Also, I eat a lot of red meat including hamburgers. Yet, I didn't realize that I would probably eat about the same as the weight of a family size car in my lifetime. Sugar is another example . 1,056 pounds of sugar would put anyone into a diabetic coma and probably death. Yet, this is what I am expected to consume in my lifetime.

I try to eat healthy foods when I can. It was interesting to see ow far some fruits have travelled before they reach me. Bananas will have travelled over 11,000 miles to reach the U.S. and I will probably eat 5,067 of them in my life time. How fresh could that banana be if it has travel so far before I can eat it? It has made me think about growing some of my own food in order to cut down on the travel time as well as the spraying and preservation methods . I'm trying to avoid those very same chemicals that they are putting in the fruit.

I am also going to begin recycling my plastics and aluminum. Throwing away 29,700 pounds of plastic in my lifetime is not going to happen if I can change it now.The waste that is produced from my footprint will make a difference in the world and I was not aware of how much waste I actually produced and what an influence I have on our future.

    Human Footprint Reaction:

After watching the first four videos of the Human footprint, I was amazed at how much water and waste we go through in a lifetime. I had thought about how many showers/baths were taken a year and understood that number, but when it described how much we used for other situations everyday (washing your face, doing dishes, etc.), I was shocked at the number. The waste was another thing that caught me by surprise. I never thought that just one person could leave behind four garbage trucks full of waste in a lifetime. Knowing these things, makes me want to recycle more often and care for the world that God has entrusted to us.

After watching the video i was shocked with how much we will consume in our lifetime. I couldn't believe the amount of water we use or how bread we will in take. I also amazed me to know how far fruit travels to get to us. After watching those videos it makes me want to watch how much food or water I waste. The section on red meat and pork surprised me more than anything. I think now I will just pay closer attention to things.

Wow,this is truly incredible. Yes, I had thought about what I use day by day and how it affects the world but I NEVER thought that by the end of my life I will end up consuming as much as they show in the video. Every year the U.S. fights against obesity and the debt left by college graduates. To know that we eat more than 1,000 pounds just in candy and use more money in beauty products than in college education leads me to think that there is a serious problem with the way we live and the way we invest our money. Where are our priorities as a society? What happen to our health and education? Also, do we really NEED all the food and products that we buy or is it something that we want?

  10. After watching this video I was absolutely shocked as was all of us who watched it. I never really took in account the number of things that every individual on Earth consumes a week, month, year, and especially a lifetime. Nobody really considers these outrageous numbers and statistics that were given in all four of these videos. From the huge number of miles something has traveled for our use or from the vast number of a product that we consume. These videos were a real eye-opener to astonishing new information!

After watching the first four videos of the Human Footprint reaction I was astound at how much each person wastes in his/her life time. It is incredible how we can find so much resource and food for every person on Earth. Every person wastes around 43,400 cans of soda in their life, and about half of the people do not recycle. So millions of these cans become waste in the world, and in a house of minimum three people it is almost 100,000 cans of waste.

After viewing the 4 videos of the human footprint, my whole perspective on how we live and what we consume changed. The human footprint videos were informative, eye-opening, and mind blowing. I had no idea that the amount of oranges we consume over a lifetime is the same as taking a trip to the moon and back. All i ever did was peel an orange and enjoy it, not thinking about how many I consume. Another fact that i found astonishing is that we in a lifetime take 28,433 showers! which is equivalent to 700,000 gallons of water. My mouth literally dropped while watching it in class and made my mom wish a water bill didn't exist. All of the human footprint videos I have watched so far, each helped me get a better understanding of how we consume products and resources. We really have a big impact on the earth by the way an average american lives and that impact can be both helpful to the earth and harmful.

  13. Honestly everything I seen in these videos surprised me, but what stood out to me most was the number of cans we use in a lifetime 43,371. I feel like that number is ridiculous. No wonder why our environment is flithy. My habits probably wont change because I feel I personally don't waste that much. But if I did change anything it would be to consume less.

  15. When I finish watching all four videos I was like OMG! There was so much interesting facts that I have NEVER even though twice about. We take so many small things for granted and I feel like people think that since it doesn’t pertains to them then it doesn’t matter. For instance the garbage; once the garbage truck comes and pick up the trash, where does it go? How is it disposed? Society seems to have an “I don’t care” and “it’s not my job” attitude. We need to do a reality check even myself because we all can do better for the environment and our community…..GO GREEN!

  16. Tamesha, you make a very good point. Many of us do not think about things such as garbage and what happens to it once it leaves are homes, but it does have a major impact on the planet.

After watching and listening to human footprint it lead me to think twice of what I eat especially the hot dogs, “it have no artificial color, flavor, filler, or by product” (Hebrew National) also no vitamin, but it do have some potassium, banana have more potassium which is healthier for individual, but the amount a human will consumed is 5,067 banana I believe they said an one year.
Now for the bread I believe whole wheat is much better than white bread, we waste so much food, they are places food is so hard to get, and here we are consuming so much for it, we don’t even care how much we throw away, like someone said we took advantages of what we have, we have to learn how to appreciate. What God have given us.

  18. These films have really opened my eyes to be more aware of what I put in my body and what I use in my every day life. No changes have been made to my habits... yet. I will try to up my recycling and reduce the amount of waste every year. My human footprint I'm sure consumes of more water bottles than what they showed in the film. I don't drink soda so the amount of cans doesn't effect me but that number was astonishing!43,371!!! OMG!!! I do loveeee a good hamburger though. You just never think about what your doing over your lifetime... most of us just live in the now. It's Crazy!!!

  28. As amazing as our consumption is, I don't see how anything less than fewer people on the earth could change it. Making healthier food choices can reduce the overall amount of food needed, but we each still require quite a bit to thrive. Even though growing your own food locally for consumption is a lot better for the planet, it still requires a massive amount of resources over a lifetime. Also, be showering/bathing less, we could use quite a bit less water, but at what cost? More disease?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I found all of the videos interesting, it really opens your eyes and makes you see all that we use. Not only does it tell us what we use but also tells us what we waste. There are many ways we can cut back and stop all the waste. I also found interesting all the sugar consumption in the united states.

  30. Whether we consider ourselves as meat lovers or strict vegetarians, we all contribute to what the documentary refers to as ‘The Human Footprint.’ After viewing all four parts of the documentary, and even if not all the figures referenced are 100% accurate, we still have a great dilemma looming over our heads. It would behoove us develop habits to help reduce waste and assist in being better Stewarts of the earth that God created for us to inhabit.
I wondered where all our trash would go if we run out of land fill for garbage disposal. Will there be enough food to feed us all in the years to come, or maybe we just need to start exploring outer space for compatible plants where some of us can relocate and establish a new civilization. What do you think?

  31. After watching the videos on footprints we will leave behind here on earth to me it is a very stressing issuse. On one hand we are maaking and producing to much waste with not enough proper disposal sites. On the other hand the foods and products we use are often needed in our daily lives for one reason or another. es we need to pay attension to the amounts of these products we us, but to go even farther we need to explore the packing and production of these item to first start to limit our waste.

  33. Watching these 4 videos have opened my mind and made me realize how much time and effort it takes to keep the average American alive! We truly live in the land of plenty! We take so much for granted but yet we cry when we don't have the latest I-Phone or the new hair style. Just our average diet of hotdogs, hamburgers, oranges, bananas, breads, sodas(coke/pepsi) and candy can make you have a headache. We must all take a deep look at ourselves and ask before we throw the other half of the burger, should I save this for later? We waste so much it is ridiculous!

  34. Watching the Human Footprint videos have been an eye opener for sure. There is so much more I could do personally to recycle and live life more simply and reduce my human footprint. I think of how many bottles of water I go through, and seeing a visual of all those cans in the video. Every little thing we do everyday from the cometics we use, to showering, to what foods we consume, all has an effect on our planet. Everyone should see these vidoeos and be more concious about our choices.

  37. We really do take for granted how blessed we are in having all the necessities that we each use on an everyday basis. I think what we dont realize is everything we use some how affects the earth. If anything we are doing more wasting and harm to the earth than anything. The amount of water that we use on a daily basis, how much milk we consume in our lifetime, how many diapers one will use and the process that goes into making them. It is stated that it will take up to 500 years or more for those diapers to bio-degrade yet it might take even longer. We each need to each put in our effort into recycling more which will get a handle on the global warming so we each can live in a healthier environment.

My views on human footprint remain the same for part 3 and 4. After a little more research into the actual exercise carried out by the National Geographic the numbers are a little skewed on YouTube but close enough for concern. Some of the numbers are based on consumption for 5-7 days a week per person over a lifetime, which is not accurate but an estimate. However, based on this assumption, we need to pay close attention to our excessive waste. I still feel manufacturers need to design materials that are biodegradable and recyclable. We as consumers need to pay closer attention to the food and items we purchase and donate more. Everything we do, eat, purchase etc., has a domino effect on our pollution.

  43. After viewing the videos and saw the amount of “stuff” we consume as a nation that was what surprised me the most. There are people in other nations starving and digging through dumpsites for food and we have this amount of overconsumption and waste it’s disheartening to look at. The Candy consumption, the hot dogs, the hamburgers, the overall junk foods that we eat are not only excessive but ruining our health and our kids’ health as well. The expired foods and the waste that goes alongside it, you cannot help but wonder why and how long will it take to figure out that this is unsustainable? What kind of a planet are we leaving for our kids to inherit? What effect this is having on our planet as a whole? How many more landfill space are we going to need? When I look at all those rubber ducks (I hope they were computer generated and not real), as that alone was vexing to me. What purpose are those rubber ducks serving? We know that at some point in the future they will be heading to the landfills which will take years to breakdown. What a life, what a planet, I hope this was an eye opener for many as it certainly was for me. Though sad to say, I do not see the habits changing anytime soon as this is a cultural thing, our kids see these things on TV, they encounter it at school; it’s in the fabric of our culture.

  44. We never thought about the amount of trees used to make newspapers and the carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere when we read the newspaper each year and throughout our lifetime. It is amazing! I believe recycling and technology helps to minimize the amount of newspapers, and magazines printed each year. We can read the newspaper and magazine on the internet, Amazon Kindle, E-book reader, the nook and so many other devices. Many companies as the supermarket, the sanitation department and ever corporations have established the “GO GREEN” programs to minimize the waste we create by recycling these products. It also amazes me to see the amount of cell phone used by Americans and amount thrown away. As indicated by Human Footprint 8, “If everyone can recycle their cell phones instead of tossing them, we can reuse precious metals and save resources, wild life and even human lives”.

  45. I couldn't believe how much bread and hot dogs the average American consumes. The amount of hamburgers we each consume would average out to the weight of a car and that's ridiculous. Americans need to focus more on having a healthier diet rather eating so much sweets and candy. I think its good how more of us are consuming fruits but many are preserved and have pesticides on them. Our use of plastics is crazy, we all want food to be packaged nicely but then throw all of it away in another plastic trash bag; we need to focus more on recycling in today's world. It was very responsible how National Geographic donated it fruit they used to animals. The amount of water used by just one country is interesting, we need to focus on our water conservation. We also need to focus on the products we flush down on drains. In just the teenage years of the young adults, we waste tons and tons of materials. This astonishes me and shows me how Americans needs to put more of an effort in conserving a future for all of us.

  47. I am amazed at how much hotdogs and bugers we consume in this country. We are to busy to sit down and have a family meal anymore and our children get punished by the amount of candy and soda's we allow them to consume. Then, obesity sits in and they feel the need to cover themselves with tons of make up, showers, hair products that takes away how big they are. My veiw of these two video's is, EAT A SALAD! Take less showers (28,433 in a lifetime, wow). The amount of makeup used in this country is rediculous. 50. Wow. After watching videos 3 and 4 I realize that we consume a lot and we waste a lot. The soda cans were unbelievable as well as the amount of water that we use in a lifetime. It really gets you to thinking how you need to be ever so careful and use only what you need. It makes you appreciate how the pioneers lived. They didn't have all this stuff to waste. They were smart to grow their own food, using everything they grew and not having to worry about pesticides. They hunted their own meat, again taking only what they needed to survive. They for the most part took baths once a week, so they weren't wasting water. The water they drank came straight from the well - no plastic water bottles. It really gets you to thinking!

As I was watching this evening I even thought that if I eat more green, fresh veggies and fruits, for example, that I would be doing better but as soon as I thought it the statistic came up that the average banana travels 11 million air miles and I know that is not good for the environment. Then the packaging and keeping it fresh. I like to eat local organic ingredients but with statistics like that it is very disheartening. Even so, I will do my best to do my part and waste less. I watched as all the bananas fell and thought to myself I am probable above average because I eat 5-6 bananas a week. I also am probable above average in water usage due to the fact that I show before I go to work and I shower when I get home from work. the amount of waste that we produce is gross and it all has to go somewhere. These are definitely things we don't think about everyday, but we should.

Other than these odd tidbits, I have taken away how much we waste as a society. I have started to recycle more in my daily life and I have begun searching for products with less packaging. While these are small measures, they are a start.

  56. Jennifer, the one aspect I feel that makes this series unique is that it does make us think about what we use. It made you think about how much nail polish you use,I know it made me realize the amount of bananas I eat. I think the more people are exposed to items like this it will help us all be aware and possibly begin to make some positive changes.

  57. After watching Human footprint videos 3 and 4 allows me to understand why we are the most unhealthiest nation, the amount of hot dogs and hamburgers we consume are unreal! And do we really eat that much candy! So are we going to change, I think not! As Americans we are us to a certain lifestyle! what would I do without lipstick?? and we will do anything to keep it.

  58. Kimberly, I think changing our habits is possible once we realize that we are consuming and wasting so much. That is the reason I like to use this series, it really does make use take a look at things and hopefully this will lead us to changing our habits.

After viewing these four videos, I am in amazement of how we really impact this earth individually. I was so surprised about how much water we each use just to show and how much waste we each generate, how many aluminum cans we dispose of and just plastic wrappers. The number of diapers that are dispose of was very shocking and learning what goes into them like the motor oil was surprising also. After viewing these videos, I have begun to be more conscious of all of the throwing away things that can be recycled and I will make a better effort to recycle.

    1. After previewing the Human Footprint videos it scares me to see the amount of consumption we have as humans. If we're going to consume such vast amounts, we have to be responsible in disposing if we're going to take care of our planet. We have to all do our part.

  60. Loretta, that is great that these videos have helped you to be more aware of the things you use. I think that if more people see things like this, it may help us not waste as much.

  61. I didn't know how many hot dogs and how many hamburgers we eat as a whole, we already know that red meat is unhealthy and all of the stuff that goes into hot dogs can't be healthy either, just from seeing this lets me know that just by consuming these things we as Americans aren't very healthy and when you add all of the candy to it it doesn't make it any better, Change is possible in any situation but will we I don't think so.

  62. I still cannot believe how much we take for granted! It is funny why America is so obese and people do not understand why! We do not do anything! We eat and work, well some of us work! We as a whole need to change. It is funny how much fast food as Americans we consume as a whole also, we need to do something about this. These are the reasons are children are developing and "growing" so much more faster than used to be because of all the processed food and such that we allow them to consume. I have never seen so many issues in a society that no one seems to want to change! Sad, is all we should be able to say! These Footsteps videos need to broadcasted across the country and then we need to take action!

  68. It was astonishing to see how much each person consumes, and scary too, because not all of our resources are renewable. I believe we get so busy in our lives that we don't stop to consider how we can lessen the depth of our footprint.

  69. I am beyond overwhelmed by the figures that were compiled in making this video. The average american will consume 43,371 cans of soda and send 64 tons of waste to the landfill during their lifetime!!! Even when trying to be healthy to think of what it takes to get the apples, oranges, and bananas to my local grocery are overwhelming. I was still a little concerned by the products that were used in the making of the video. It was good to see that the piggy's did get fed with the bananas.

  70. wow! each person consumes and uses way to much when you break it down the way the human footprint did. Its crazy to see how much we intake and how much we waste throughout our journeys in life! For example all the soda that we consume... I drink one soda in the morning for the caffeine but to think about everyone else and how much we consume as a whole is it unfathomable! I love watching these videos!

  71. After watching these videos it has definitely opened my eyes. There is so much that we take for granted in this life! In the first video it shows us what a diaper consist of. That alone blew my mind away! I cannot wrap this around my head, that even as babies we consume a lot of things. It later on shows us the amount of bread that we will eat in a lifetime. That got me thinking to all the other food that they didn't show us. Americans have unlimited choices when it comes to food. Imagine all the other types of food that we consume in our lives. I am going to try and not be so wasteful of my food after watching this. These videos made me much more aware of my surroundings. I want the world to stay a clean and healthy place for all of us! I am definitely going to show my friends this so that they could change some of their habits as well! These videos made me appreciate the little things in life!

  73. The videos really show you how much we take for granted. Honestly, its so second nature to just do thing without thinking (half eaten food, throwing trash on the ground, using our cars without hesitation) because we're so fortunate and we forget how blessed we really are. We've been stuck in certain habits so long because we're in the first world, and I believe we don't truly appreciate our surroundings and environment.

These videos are always an eye opener for me! It's hard to imagine how much we waste everyday. It is a shame that we throw out half eaten food with not much thought sometimes. We are a very fortunate country to have as many resources that we have, but, we need to take a look at the waste that we are producing. It is shameful that Americans consume so much candy each year as well. This is terrible for our bodies and the video said that most American consume at least one full shopping cart of candy each year! If we don't get a hold of the problem of producing so much waste, the world will not be a very pretty place for our kids and their kids!

I tend to look at thing in a broad kind of way now. I am trying to make better choices to do my part to help preserve some of our natural resources. I was so impressed with the video that I introduced it to other members of my family, so that they will understand how we easily waste resources without knowing the pros and cons of it all.

  82. After viewing the Human Foot Print videos, It amazes me how much us Americans waste food. It makes me think maybe if other places like Jamaica, Hati, etc would have the same opportunity at eating the ways Americans do they maybe wouldn't waste things. Us Americans should be extremely grateful that we have enough food to even have an option in our minds to waste it. What shocked me in the video is when it said that we eat so much candy and bread each year. What was not shocking was seeing the kids walk by the vegetable aisle and not even consider eating anything healthy. It didn't shock me because I personally have done it before.

  83. I was blow away by the vanity that we as American possess. We spend more money on beauty than we do on education. When thinking about the grocery stores and whenever fruit in on sale we think we are getting a deal but an apple may sit in a warehouse for up to a year! The amount of waste we produce in our lifetime is ridiculous. I was in denial about being able to fill up one dump trunk. It instantly make me want to do something to dramatically reduce my waste. I have always been mindless when it comes to preserving water but without showering we are still using a lot of water and a little less than half of it turns into waste water.

  84. Watching the videos made me more apprehensive about the things I eat and consume. Watching how the fruit got processed grossed me out. I love to eat fruit so watching this really made me wonder just how healthy our fruit really is. I try to be mindful about how much water I use by Turing off the faucet as I brush my teeth and in between washing dishes. I wish to continue to be more mindful of the water I waste as well as watching what I eat. I will look into getting fruits that are actually in season so it would be healthier for me and my baby. We as Americans are very wasteful and the videos helped me see it more clear.

At times I find myself eating things that I know are terrible for my body and I just have to make the decision to stop. Many things of the world that I wouldn't consume so why do I continue to being part of a global problem. My wife and I have been on a journey to try and take a better look at how we interact with our environment, and with our bodies through the foods we eat and the clothing that we wear. These videos have been eye opening especially the amount of waste. What the videos don't show is the amount of trash that is just floating around the ocean making islands of diapers of the coast of Mexico somewhere.

  86. After viewing the Human Footprint videos I think that it is crazy the amount that we spend on beauty and care products. When they said that we spend more on that than we do on education is mind blowing. I pay for my education and I know how much that is, so I do not want to know how much I have spent on beauty products. The main reason is because I know I am guilty of paying a lot for the products that are supposed to be the latest and the greatest, to make me look and feel better. These videos are a major eye opener and show us how much we are really using and what we are leaving behind for generations to come.

  88. After watching The Human Footprint part 3 and 4, the thing that stood out the most is: we consume more sodas each year than we take showers. I also liked how she pointed out we spend more money on beauty products than education. This never occurred to me. With the amount of plastic bottles, trash and cans we throw away each year, I'm surprised we have land to roam. I was not shocked on the amount of hamburgers we consume each year. I personally do not care for them and could live without them, but most do not feel the same as me. I was glad to see more fruit is consumed than I expected.

  90. 87,000 slices of bread was crazy. I can absolutely believe the volume of soda people drink. I haven't had soda in 10 months and won't be drinking it again, so my amounts will be extremely less than the average American. The amount of toiletries was surprising to me; even though I expected certain items to be higher in number. The waste we have and how we are filling the landfills with products that we have no idea how long it will take them to breakdown is astounding. It definitely will make me think every time I throw something away.

After viewing the first 4 videos, what are your reactions? Was there anything that surprised you? Do you think after seeing these videos any of your habits will change?

I am surprised at how unaware I am of the impact I make daily. When the video showed the amount of waste and said many of us throw our garbage out and think that’s the end of it. That statement was very true, I have never stopped to think of the landfills and the amount of waste regularly dumped. The information that surprised me the most was that during the winter month apples can sit in a warehouse for close to a year!! YUCK, that makes me not want to buy apples unless they are in season! I think that after watching the video on how many “beauty” products we use, I will be a little more conservative on what I do buy now that I am aware of the impact.

  94. Just the first minute of video #3 is already a huge chocking statement: 4 BILLIONS of dollars spent in hot dogs and hamburgers. What can we say about that ? It is unbelievable to hear such things. Also all the amount of sweet prodcuts such as candies and sodas is something we wish we could change when we see such videos but it is hard to change a lifetime routine. Also the amount of products we throw away and the water we use is just something hard to believe too. All this water that could be used for people that need it.
These videos just keep opening our eyes and i feel like the more we see them the bigger it gets in consuming. We are not taking care of ourselves and we are not taking care of our planet thats what come to my mind when i see these 2 videos.

  95. After watching these videos, I am reminded of how blessed and privileged we are to live in this country. I am also reminded of how spoiled and careless our society has become. We have every want and need at our disposal, and we have taken these advantages for granted. We not only overuse, but we waste many of our resources without thnking of the consequences of our lifestyle. I know that these videos are a reminder for me to be mindful of the footprint I am leaving on this planet, and to also try to educate others of the importance of conserving our resources.

  96. The videos are very intriguing. I would have never thought we consumed the quantity of sodas, bread, fruit and candy during our lifetimes. Some of the products that we utilized, whether it be deodorants, soap and water, we have to use in order to fit in societal norms. So, we just need to find more environmentally responsible ways to produce and utilize these items. Derek Gabbard

  97. My thoughts for Human Footprint Videos 5 and 6 are:
I had actually expected the beer and wine consumption to be more per drinker and person. It was shocking to see a man spends $53,000 on average for clothes in a lifetime. It was not surprising women spends much more. The average wedding for a little over $26,000 was not surprising. I will admit, my husband and I spent much more than that. However, looking back, I love the memories and pictures, but I think it is wiser to spend that money on a house and a life vs. one day. It is amazing how much lumber it takes to put together a house. I think we may go through more washers and dryers and TV’s than mentioned. I found 15 computers to be low too. To unplug everything when not using, I’ll admit, would be a big chore.
